DESCRIPTION:non members £16.50 \n \nWe will travel by underground to Westminster and walk to Buckingham Palace where you will learn about the Guard Change and the history of Buckingham Palace and its day to day workings. From here witness the new Cavalry Guard making its way along to Horse Guards. We shall stroll along The Mall passing Clarence House and the historic St James’ Palace.\nWe continue along to the area of St James’ highlighting some historic shops that for generations have been used by the Royal Family and make our way from St James to Trafalgar Square where the history of this famous square (the centre of London) will be explained.\nWe finally finish back to Westminster to hear the history of Parliament\, Westminster Abbey and the connections with the Royal Family.\nA lot of hidden secrets will be told ! \nWalkers to make their own way to Liverpool Street Station and meet at the Kinder Transport statue outside the main tube entrance by 9.50am to then go and meet the guide\, Gary Egerton. Popular on TV\, radio and podcasts\, Clare reviews widely\, and has judged several book prizes. She is a recipient of the Polish honour\, the Bene Merito\, and the Daily Mail Biographers Club Prize. SUMMARY:Osteoporosis Bone Density Heel Scan at WI Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Osteoporosis Assessment Service will be visiting WI Centre with their heel ultrasound scanner (McCue CUBAClinical) which does not use X-rays but safe ultrasound signals. The bone density measured in the heel is strongly related to the hip and spine and is an excellent surrogate scanning site for osteoporosis assessments.  A small amount of ultrasound gel is placed on a bare heel and the scan is performed within 3 minutes. DESCRIPTION:1. Full day 10.30am-3pm – morning talk and afternoon workshop in person (10 places available)\n2. Morning talk on Zoom \n \nTalk: Shetland Lace\nA talk by Elizabeth Williamson followed by a Q&A session.  Elizabeth will talk about the history of lace knitting in Shetland and her own family’s history of knitting.  She will also discuss her experiences of growing up in Shetland surrounded by knitters and being taught to knit at the age of 3.  Elizabeth will be showing examples of her work and that of her family. \nWorkshop: An introduction to Shetland Lace Rosebud pattern\nIn this workshop\, Elizabeth will take you through the basic stitches and techniques of Shetland Lace knitting.  At the end of the session\, you will have a swatch of the Rosebud pattern on a garter base.  It is a great pattern and can be used in different arrangements to form the centre of haps or shawls and scarves.  This workshop is suitable for all skill levels as long as you can already knit. \nYou will need Size 4mm knitting needles and either lace weight or 4ply/sock weight preferably in the light colour so that you can see your stitches easily.  Please see pre-workshop instructions on your confirmation. \nYou have various options of tickets\, please select your preferred choice when booking.

DESCRIPTION:Non members £26 \n \nTo celebrate our heritage focus during 2024 in C&CC\, we will be serving a traditional afternoon tea with sandwiches\, scones and cakes\, served on vintage china. Angela Flynn will be preparing and serving the tea\, supported by C&CC team members as waitresses.  After the tea there will be an illustrated talk by Nick Wickenden\, Museum Curator of Wilkin and Sons Tiptree\, on the history of the farm and family.  Tiptree jam is a traditional part of afternoon tea for us in Essex. \nTea\, cakes\, chat and companionship are the order of the day. \nNon members welcome.

DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT \n \nAt our County Annual Meeting on 22nd May 2024\, FEWI’s Resolutions Co-Ordinator\, Laura Pisaneschi (Chafford Hundred WI) and the Resolution Proposer\, Frances Simmons (Wanstead WI ) launched an Essex Federation Resolution to improve Palliative and End of Life Care Services.  We are hosting a free Zoom discussion on the 10th June 2024 at 7pm regarding the proposal . Please join Laura and Frances to discuss the proposed resolution and to hear more about the proposal and the steps involved to get an Essex Resolution up and running to campaign level. \nEveryone is welcome – if you are new to resolutions\, or have been following them for years\, come along and hear about this important issue.

Simple but messy\, you will learn how to stiffen and shape the poppy petals and put them together to make either a brooch\, corsage or to add to a fascinator. SUMMARY:Mountmellick Stitch Sampler with Pat Trott
DESCRIPTION:C&CC are pleased to be able to offer this workshop in Mountmellick Embroidery with Pat Trott\, who is an expert in this field. Mountemellick is a whitework technique developed in Ireland during the 19th century. It is traditionally known as white on white and has very distinctive stitches. \nAt this workshop you will be learning a number of the stitches and creating a sampler. Pat will provide advice on projects that can be completed after the workshop.  You will receive a kit which will include the material and the threads for working on your sampler on the day. A requirement list of additional items needed is listed below. This is a unique opportunity to learn a new technique from a renowned embroiderer. \nPlease bring a mug for tea/coffee and a packed lunch. \nMountmellick Embroidery is traditionally worked on closely woven white cotton satin ‘jean’ with matte white cotton thread and has the following characteristics:- \n1. It is always white-on-white.\n2. It has contrast:- [a] smooth satin stitch against padded and knotted stitchery\n                                  [b] Cotton satin fabric\, matte cotton thread.\n3. The absence of eyelets or open work.\n4. Natural floral design\, fairly large in scale.\n5. Buttonholed and fringed edges. \nPlease bring the following items:-\nGeneral sewing equipment to include embroidery scissors and chenille needles sizes 24 and 26\nA frame – either tambour (round) and/or a slate frame (square) size 8” or 10” or 12”\nCrochet cotton\, to lace fabric to frame if using a slate frame.\nTracing paper and pencil/dressmakers carbon OR blue water soluble fabric marker pen.\nA pair of number 10 or 12 knitting needles (or 3.25mm or 2.75mm metric sizes)\nGlasses and magnifier if required. \nPat will also have copies of her book for sale at £9 each. \nNon members welcome £44
