SUMMARY:Osteoporosis Bone Density Heel Scan at WI Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Osteoporosis Assessment Service will be visiting WI Centre with their heel ultrasound scanner (McCue CUBAClinical) which does not use X-rays but safe ultrasound signals. The bone density measured in the heel is strongly related to the hip and spine and is an excellent surrogate scanning site for osteoporosis assessments.  A small amount of ultrasound gel is placed on a bare heel and the scan is performed within 3 minutes. SUMMARY:EDEN'S KEEPERS - the story of Gardens\, Love and WI by acclaimed author Sarah Barclay
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Barclay is a journalist and author\, having had a column in You Magazine and various other publications. She has been researching and writing Eden’s Keepers which is about Nancy Tennant who was born in Ugley\, and\, after the first World War\, devoted herself to music and to the Women’s Institute\, which was a new organisation at the time.  As Music Organiser from 1938 of the Federation of Women’s Institutes\, her enthusiasm led to the creation of WI choirs from all around the country. She played a prominent part in the life of the Women’s Institute\, and a Blue Plaque is due to be erected in her honour in Ugley. \nSarah is an experienced and exciting speaker who is passionate about the relationship of her distant cousin Nancy.  Join us on this Zoom meeting and find out all about the true love story behind the creation of acclaimed gardens\, and the part she played in our Women’s Institute.

DESCRIPTION:2.30pm and 7.30pm\n  \n \nFEWI is delighted to announce the return of our annual Carol Concerts in St Mary the Virgin\, Saffron Walden at 2.30 and 7.30.  Please ensure you select ​your preferred time when booking your ticket. \n\nSt Mary’s is the largest non-cathedral church in Essex with an overall length of 183 feet and the spire is 193 feet high.  There has been a church on this site since Norman times\, the current building dates predominantly from 1250. www.visitsaffronwalden.gov.uk    \n \nLocal soprano\, Nancy-May will be performing a selection of festive treats\, as will local community choirs who will be attending. There will be seasonal readings and best of all\, a selection of Christmas Carols for us all to sing. \n \nRadwinter WI has very kindly offered to provide refreshments before each of the services in the Parish Rooms\, which are just beside the church. \n\nPlease note that there is no parking at the church but parking in available nearby – on the Common CB10 1JG and a large car park at Swan Meadow CB10 1DA which also offers parking for coaches.

This rather special old gentleman would stand at your door to welcome you through the festive season. He measures twenty inches high on a 6inch base and is a dark red with white trim. A kit with all the fabrics required to make him will be provided\, and a list of any additional items required will be sent once you have booked.   \nThis workshop will take place over two days in consecutive weeks (with some ‘homework’ in between). SUMMARY:Patchwork Cushion making with Paulette Brabin
DESCRIPTION:Early bird ticket price £28 if booked before 31st May \nNon members £33 \n \nEver wanted to learn to patchwork. Now C&CC are offering you the opportunity to try this diverse craft. This workshop is concentrating on one aspect of patchwork\, American blocks\, and you will also learn a basic quilting technique.   At the end of the workshop\, you will leave with a completed cushion cover. The cost includes the fabric for the cover with a variety of colours and patterns to choose from.\nThe workshop will include a demonstration on the selection\, preparation and cutting of the blocks.  Having selected your fabrics\, you will join the shapes to form the block and then finally the cushion cover. Basic quilting techniques will be employed to finish the cover.\nYour tutor is Paulette\, a C&CC committee member\, who is a very enthusiastic and skilled patch worker and quilter\, who has been exploring and enjoying this craft for over 40 years.\nYou will need to bring your own sewing machine and be competent in basic stitching.  The full list of requirements will be sent with your confirmation. \nPlease bring your own mug and a packed lunch.

SUMMARY:FEWI - Platinum Jubilee Walk - London
DESCRIPTION:Meeting at Liverpool Street Station at 10am\, we will travel by underground to Westminster and walk to Buckingham Palace where you will witness the Guard Change (if scheduled this day) and be given an explanation of the history of Buckingham Palace and its day-to-day workings. From here witness the new Cavalry Guard making its way along to Horse Guards. We shall stroll along The Mall passing Clarence House and the historic St James’ Palace. We continue along to the area of St James highlighting some historic shops that for generations have been used by the Royal Family and make our way from St James to Trafalgar Square where the history of this famous square (the centre of London) will be explained.  We finally finish back to Westminster to hear the history of Parliament\, Westminster Abbey and the connections with the Royal Family.
