SOS for Honeybees

We need your help!

The WI’s campaign SOS for Honey Bees is as relevant today as it was 10 years ago. Many species of bee are still on the brink of extinction in parts of the UK therefore the Essex PA Committee are in the process of planning a project to raise more awareness of their plight and what the public can do to help.

We have yet to finalise the details of the project so, why are we coming to you now?

The main ways we can all help bees is to provide them with a year-round source of food using bee friendly plants and flowers. In our project we want to highlight this by giving away seeds to encourage as many people as possible to grow bee friendly plants but as we all know finances are tight.

This is where we need your help…

We are now entering the time of year when flowers start to set seed and we were hoping you might collect some from bee friendly plants to help us with this project. We would also be grateful for half used packets of seeds that you may have left over or packets unused that many garden magazines give away. Any wildflowers seeds would also be gratefully received. A list of examples of bee friendly plants is at the bottom of this message but we realise there are many others.

Additionally, when you get around to trimming your Lavender Bushes and if you don’t need the seeds yourself, we would be very grateful for those too.

Bee Friendly Flowers (in no particular order):

Foxgloves, Monarda, Helenium, Forget Me Nots, Sunflowers, Cosmos, Verbena Bonariensis, Japanese Anemone, Nepta, Sweet William, Perovskia/Russian Sage, Achillea, Scabious Lavendar, Calendules/Marigolds, Sedum, Rudbekia, Agastache/Hyssop, Borage, Aster/Michaelmiss and Daises

All seeds should be put in an envelope or paper bag and clearly labelled as to the type of seed inside. These can then be sent to:
