In 2023 we began a project to bring together lots of archive information of all the WIs that have ever belonged to Essex Federation. It all started with the embroidered "bricks" that have been made for most WIs in Essex over the years. Many of you will have seen the "brick panels" that have been displayed at various events with around 100 bricks stitched together to form panels. We have four completed panels and around 10 bricks ready and waiting for a fifth panel when we have enough. In the table below you can see every brick that exists. In most cases we were given a little information about the brick - who designed and embroidered it, together with a brief description of the images depicted on the bricks. Some bricks, however, we have no information about so if you are able to fill in any gaps, please do let us know.
Once we had gathered all our brick information together, we also transcribed the information that was included in a book called Essex Then & Now which was produced by Essex Federation in 1987. This gives a fascinating snapshot of all the WIs that existed at that time and each entry is reproduced here. Each record also shows which Group the WI was part of at that time. If you click on each image, it will open up the text for individual records.
This is a work in progress so please do feel free to send in any information you have to help us complete our historical record of WIs in Essex through the years.
You can scroll through the alphabetical list or use the search function to find a specific WI. As with all searches less is more, so we recommend single word searches like Witham or Hanningfield rather than something like "Finchingfield and Cornish Hall End" - this is because computers are very literal and if the latter is listed as "Finchingfield & Cornish Hall End" your search might not find it. We have tried to ensure that WIs without their village/town in their name have their village/town written somewhere in their text, e.g. if you search "Coggeshall", Paycockes WI will be included in the results. If you find any search errors where this does not happen, please let us know.
